Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is an FDA approved oral anticoagulant (anti-clotting drug). Doctors usually prescribe this medicine to prevent blood clots in patients who would have undergone total hip replacement or knee replacement surgery. It is also used to prevent stroke among patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. People using this medicine should not stop using it without consulting their doctor. It may increase the risk of blood clot, leading to further complications like stroke.
Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers should not use this medicine. People below 18 years and above 65 years should avoid using Xarelto. Patients with high blood pressure should not use Xarelto. It is a prescription medicine and has to be used exactly as directed by the doctor.
Xarelto is known to cause side effects. This medicine has caused serious allergic reactions (like difficulty in breathing, swelling in the throat, hives and swelling in the face) in some patients. These side effects have to be treated as medical emergency.
Bleeding is the most common side effect of this medicine. Some patients have experienced bleeding in the nose after using this medicine. Some patients have reported an increase in certain liver enzymes after using Xarelto. Vomiting, yellowing of the skin, diarrhea, loss of appetite, pale stools, dark urine, weight loss and yellowing of the white part of the eyes are some signs of liver disorder. This medicine may cause sore joints.
Xarelto may cause internal bleeding. Swelling without any particular reason, paleness, dizziness, weakness and headache are some symptoms of unidentified internal bleeding. Consuming Xarelto may cause painful joints.
