Liniments and Rubs for Sprains and Arthritic Conditions

One of the best rubs there has ever been is castrated oil, however it is not sold any longer on the commercial market. Do not despair as it is possible to make your own. You can buy camphor blocks from your local pharmacy. It is excellent to rub on the chest when you have a chest cold and is a wonder rub for arthritic conditions. Simply shave the camphor block in a glass bowl. Add one ounce of menthol crystals. You can buy crystals through your pharmacist as well. When you mix the crystals with the camphor shavings it will melt into a liquid. You will then need to add this liquid to one pint of a heavy mineral oil or one pint of olive oil. Shake this really well and it is now ready for use. You can use this to treat arthritis, rheumatism, and strained and pulled muscles. It can also be used for chest congestion by applying it to the chest.

To make an excellent arthritis liniment, place one cup of melted paraffin and one cup of grated horseradish in a blender. Blend this until it becomes liquefied. Then rub this on the affected area and loosely wrap with a piece of flannel cloth. Leave this on overnight. The next morning rinse it off and repeat this process until the swelling is gone. Store the liniment in a tightly closed jar and at room temperature.

To make a rheumatic pain liniment, put a half cup of rosemary leaves and a half cup of oil of cloves in one cup of vegetable oil. Simmer this for 15 minutes. Strain the herbs well from the oil and put into a bottle. Use this as you would a poultice as often as you need to for pain.

Another good arthritis liniment that you can use in the morning if needed, is to mix a half cup of salt and dry mustard together. Then add melted paraffin. Add enough paraffin to make a paste consistency. This can be left on the skin until the next day if you desire. Rub this liniment on the affected area. This will help to alleviate swelling and pain.

A wonderful overnight treatment for arthritis is to mix a half cup of apple cider vinegar, half cup of turpentine, and a half cup of olive oil together. Then rub this on the affected area or joint every night before bedtime.

Use this liniment for arthritis, rheumatism, and stiff joints. Mix two ounces of mullein herbs, one tablespoon of cayenne pepper, and one cup of lobelia together. Then add two quarts of apple cider vinegar. Simmer this mixture for twenty minutes and then strain it well. When using this, reheat the mixture and soak a cloth in it. Use the cloth as you would a compress on the affected area. 

Add a tablespoon of bruised mustard seeds and a half cup of cayenne pepper to one pint of dark whiskey. Simmer this for 10 to 15 minutes and then strain well. Dip a cloth into the liquid when it is still hot and apply it to the affected area or joint. Put the remaining in a glass bottle. You will need to reheat it each time this is used. This relives pain quickly. Be sure to apply warm olive oil to the area or joint prior to applying the poultice.

Another good arthritis treatment, is to mix one quart of apple cider vinegar to one quart of hot water. Dip a cotton cloth in the hot mixture and apply the cloth as you would a compress. Place a heating pad on the compress and leave it for twenty minutes. 

For sprains, bruise two cups of sage leaves. Place the bruised sage leaves in a half pint of white vinegar and boil them for five minutes. Dip a cotton cloth in the boiling mixture and then wring the cloth out. Make sure the cloth is as hot as you can possibly stand it. Apply the cloth to the sprained area. To make a liniment for sprains and sore joints, mix together two teaspoons of grated horseradish with one cup of vegetable oil. Bring this mixture to a boil and then lower the heat to a simmer. Simmer this for fifteen minutes. Strain the horseradish from the liquid and put it in glass bottles. Be sure to label the bottles.

Another great liniment for sprains is to mix one cup of turpentine and three cups of vegetable oil together. This can be used as a massage oil for sprains and sore joints. Use this to massage sore muscles. Mix a quarter cup of olive oil and a quarter cup of spirits of camphor together.

Use this to massage the sore area. Put an onion in a blender and blend it until it is fully pulverized. Add one cup of olive oil until it  becomes smooth. Spread this mixture on a cotton cloth and use it as you would a poultice on muscles that are pulled. Be sure to cover it so it will be kept warm. .
